No idea why they can't use "conventional" 155mm ordnance in those guns in the meantime...at least that would give it some NGFS capability, and be inexpensive to shoot. Speaking of NGFS, the Marines weren't happy when we retired the Iowa class ships with their 16" guns. The next largest "gun" in the Naval inventory was the 5"54s. Although a 5" is a great round, it's still a "pop-gun" compared to the 16" rounds the BBs sent downrange. They literally turned mountains into molehills.

Bottom line: Thank God for Naval Aviation!
